Vert-X 40E MT: Absolute 16-bit multiturn angle measurement and 16-bit revolution counter
4:48
Contelec has long offered a range of multiturn encoders for absolute angle measurement and revolution counting. However, the measurement of these traditional types requires a mechanical coupling between the axis of the encoder and the moving part of the application. This coupling is structurally complex and often requires a costly coupling that is susceptible to mechanical damage over its service life, takes up a lot of space and generates a torque that is sometimes undesirable.

Vert-X 40E MT: Contactless and bearingless measurement

The innovative engineering team at Contelec has therefore developed a new alternative: the Vert-X 40E MT absolute multiturn encoder with equivalent functionality. Instead of an axis and a mechanical coupling, this uses a bearingless external magnetic encoder (ExMag). This also enables transmissive measurements through non-ferromagnetic metals, for example measurements through an aluminum housing, where the sensor is located on one side of the housing and the magnetic encoder on the other.

The absolute revolution counter can be freely set within 16 bits. Alternative, stand-alone absolute multiturn sensors, which work according to the domain principle and can currently count 46 revolutions, have the disadvantage that the counter cannot be set freely by the user. This means that after 46 revolutions, the counter remains at the number of revolutions 46 when turning further. The sensor must be rotated to the desired initial position or a reset pulse must be performed, which requires additional hardware. Both factors can be a decisive disadvantage in applications or for installation.

High level of integration

The elimination of the axle and coupling in the Vert-X 40E MT enables a much more compact design in the application and allows a higher level of integration. The torque is also eliminated, which can be an advantage in energy-optimized applications. In addition, the contactless and bearingless ExMag principle allows greater tolerances during installation and in the application over the service life. Transverse and axial loads are eliminated as the sensor principle works without bearings. It is robust against vibrations that could damage or even destroy the necessary mechanical coupling in bearing-based systems.

For even greater integration in tight spaces, modules consisting of the electronics and the external magnetic encoder (ExMag) are also available on request. To ensure perfect function, the installation must be discussed in detail.

Vert-X 28MT, Vert-X 37MT and Vert-X 46MT: Proven range remains available

The tried and tested 16-bit absolute multiturn encoders Vert-X 28MT, Vert-X 37MT and Vert-X 46MT from Contelec continuously record both the current angle of rotation and the number of 360° rotations performed. They allow battery-free, autonomous revolution counting of up to 16 bits without a gearbox, which continues counting when the sensor is rotating but switched off. By counting the number of revolutions, large linear distances can be measured rotationally with a compact sensor. With this feature, Contelec's multiturn encoders have proven themselves for years in medical technology, for example.

Innovation and customer focus included at Contelec

As an innovation partner, Contelec actively supports its customers with in-depth expertise to find the optimum solution for their application or project. For example, the portfolio of the new bearingless ExMag-based multiturn encoders is not limited to standard versions. Depending on the requirements of the project, a wide variety of housings, plug connections and interface protocols are possible.
